Street children or street connected children are kids that for many reasons end up living in the streets or spending most of their time in the streets, even if they have a house where they can go back. In the streets, they face many dangers and are constantly hustling to make sure they survive.

One of the most dangerous ones is getting addicted to toxic substances. Since they are under no supervision, these children are easily swayed into using these substances like petrol, cigarettes, marijuana, ‘cuba’, among others. Once they are addicted, they will do whatever it takes to get the substance and thus develop more bad habits to sustain themselves. At this point they end up stealing, pickpocketing and doing all sorts of bad behavior in order to sustain their addictions and their entire existence on the streets.

Addictions are not the only problems that these children face on the streets, they are also exposed to diseases and infections. Since they entirely depend on themselves, their health is at risk at all times because of the conditions out there. The sharp objects they encounter while they ravage through the garbage expose them to HIV and other related infections. Other diseases include malaria, pneumonia, and other skin diseases.

In other circumstances, some of the small boys get bullied by the bigger boys whom they find on the streets. This makes it harder for the small boys to fend for themselves peacefully hence street life worse than it already is.

These and other dangers have made organizations and other civil societies to actively work towards caring for and rehabilitating the street connected children. But it would be a waste of time if the initial reasons why these children end up on the streets are not dealt with.

Some of the children end up on the streets because they have been orphaned by HIV, wars and other diseases and the relatives are not willing to take care of them. With no one to be accountable to, these children just end up on the streets to try and fend for themselves.

Some of the children have bad habits that they are not willing to change like stealing, beating others etc, so they choose to leave their homes and go to the streets where they can do whatever they want without any accountability.

Life on the streets may seem liberal and all free some of the children choose to go there because their peers make it look enjoyable.

Some of the children are faced with violence back at their homes and cannot cope with the situation, thus flee to the streets to escape the dysfunctionalities.

With that in mind, as organizations and individuals seek to cub the growing number of streets connected children, addressing its causes is also a good way to approach the situation.
